Wicklow County Council has granted the Enniskerry’s Bog Meadow Management Company permission to upgrade facilities in the centre of the village.

Following the granting of a lease by Wicklow County Council in late 2021, the company has been engaged in an extensive exercise to determine how the public amenity facilities could be improved for the local community.

The plan was formed on the information that consultants Repucon produced in 2022, having created an independent masterplan for the group after consulting with the local community.

At a public meeting in September 2025 where over 70 people attended, the board presented an update on their development plan for the area, which includes a new sports and community hall, multi-use games area, drainage works to the grass pitch, improved tennis facilities and a padel court.

The site currently hosts the Enniskerry Football Club with more than 450 children, the tennis club with over 350 members and the Enniskerry/Kilmacanougue community games.

The meadow is an environmentally sensitive site, sitting between two Special areas of Conservation and beside a river. An extensive range of ecological assessments have been carried out in the planning, and the development is to stay within the constraints of the current layout.

The proposed development seeks to enhance and upgrade these existing amenities to better serve the current and evolving needs of local user groups, clubs and the wider Enniskerry community.

In summary, the proposed development comprises; • the demolition of the existing club house • removal of existing sauna, changing rooms and associated outdoor areas • repositioning and enlargement of the existing playing pitch to provide a new 90mx55m playing pitch • repositioning of the existing tennis courts • replacement of the existing astro turf pitch with a new astro turf pitch, • provision of a warm-up/ drills area on site, construction of 1 no. padel court • construction of a new community hall incorporating multi-purpose rooms • large hall, dressing rooms, toilets, meeting room and offices with entrances at ground and first floor level. • Landscaping, drainage and internal road layout adjustments. • All ancillary site services and development works

Enniskerry Football Club in a submission strongly supported the application as their facilities remain inadequate and outdated.

At present, the club are forced to rent pitches and training spaces outside the village, which places a significant financial burden on the club (€43,343 in 2024) and requires members and their parents to travel regularly for training and matches. The club believes the situation is unsustainable and limits future growth and accessibility.

The Enniskerry Tennis Club also called for the plans to be approved highlighting how their facilities are adequate for playing, but the lighting is outdated and there are no clubhouse facilities with showers, dressing rooms and toilets. These constraints have stunted the growth of the club.

The local authority’s planning office has granted permission for the works on condition they protect wildlife, road safety and the existing amenities of the area.
